Auscultation Lab

Auscultation Lab is for education only. It does not diagnose any condition, and nothing on this site should be used to make decisions about a patient's care.

Educational purpose

Auscultation Lab helps learners recognize heart sounds and murmurs. It is intended for students, trainees and licensed clinicians studying cardiac auscultation. It is not a medical device and has not been evaluated or cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration or any other regulator.

Synthesized sounds are models

The sounds in the library are synthesized from published descriptions of timing, pitch and shape. They are simplified to make features easier to hear and may differ from what you hear in real patients. Real heart sounds vary with age, body habitus, heart rate, recording equipment and the clinical situation.

Automated analysis can be wrong

The Real recordings tab uses automated signal processing to locate S1 and S2, separate a recording into tracks and measure murmurs. These measurements can be inaccurate, especially with background noise, irregular rhythms, fast heart rates or poor-quality recordings. Optional AI explanations are generated by a language model from those measurements and may also be wrong. Never rely on them for diagnosis or referral decisions.

Not a substitute for clinical care

Decisions about evaluation, echocardiography, referral and treatment must be made by qualified clinicians using a complete history and examination and appropriate testing. If you are concerned about a patient — or about yourself or your child — contact a qualified health care professional. In an emergency, call your local emergency number.
